Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering accurate, insightful news from every corner of the world, 24 hours a day. Since its founding in 1846, AP has been the first to report many of history’s most important moments, and every day, AP journalists, photographers and videographers file news from the front lines of the world's biggest stories.

AP’s reporting, photography, audio and video are published and broadcast by the world’s leading newspapers, TV channels, apps, radio stations, websites and magazines—in fact, over half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.

As a leader in the field of journalism, AP fights for freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Its reporters take great risks to file in-depth stories from countries where the press is otherwise restrained, and in the U.S., AP aggressively uses the Freedom of Information Act to advocate for transparency and accountability in government.

With more experience reporting and delivering news than any other agency, a well-earned reputation for independence and accuracy, and a fierce commitment to the people’s right to know, AP is the definitive source for trusted news.

Records broken

UNDATED (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates had a chance this week to move into a tie with the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead. Instead, the Cubs have left the Steel City with a six-game lead after completing a three-game sweep of the Bucs.

Jon Lester worked in and out of trouble while tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Chicago's 6-2 win over the Pirates. Lester surrendered eight hits and two walks but lowered his ERA to 1.58. The lefty has allowed fewer than two runs in five of six starts this season.

Ben Zobrist (ZOH'-brihst) opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the third inning of the Cubs' seventh victory in eight games. Anthony Rizzo was 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored as the Cubs improved to a major league-best 20-6.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Patric Hornqvist beat Braden Holtby between the legs 2:34 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night in Game 4 of the second-round series.

Washington's Mike Weber tried to clear a shot, but the puck went right to Hornqvist in the circle. He buried it for his fifth goal of the postseason to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals. Game 5 is Saturday night in Washington.

The Penguins ended an eight-game losing streak in overtime playoff games.

Matt Cullen and Trevor Daley also scored for Pittsburgh, and rookie goalie Matt Murray stopped 34 shots.

Jay Beagle and John Carlson scored for Washington. Holtby made 29 saves, but the Capitals dropped a third straight game, something they did once all season.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Phillips, Eugenio Suarez and Zack Cozart homered in a five-run first inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat Jake Peavy for the first time in a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants Wednesday.

Adam Duvall added a solo shot for the Reds, and Dan Straily (1-1) overcame solo homers by Brandon Belt and Conor Gillaspie for his first major league win since April 10, 2014, with Oakland. Cincinnati avoided getting swept in the three-game series.

Mac Williamson and Denard Span hit consecutive two-out doubles in the ninth off Ross Ohlendorf. Cincinnati's bullpen has allowed runs in a big league record 22 consecutive games.

Peavy (1-3) allowed seven runs and eight hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, raising his ERA to 9.00 in six starts. He had been 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 12 starts against the Reds.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber pitched a five-hit shutout and the Cleveland Indians used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers for the fifth straight time this season, 4-0 Wednesday night.

Kluber (2-3) worked out of jams in the second and fourth to beat Detroit for the second time in two weeks. The right-hander, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2014, struck out seven and walked two in his second career shutout and eighth complete game.

Anibal Sanchez (3-3) didn't allow a hit through three innings, but gave up four runs on three hits, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch in the fourth.

Michael Brantley's RBI single and Mike Napoli's run-scoring double gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead. Another run scored on Sanchez's wild pitch before Yan Gomes' double capped the scoring.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jeff Samardzija went eight innings to win his third straight start - a career first - and the San Francisco Giants rallied for two runs in the eighth inning against the Reds' historically bad bullpen for a 3-1 victory Tuesday night.

Cincinnati's bullpen gave up at least one run for the 21st consecutive game, surpassing the 2013 Colorado Rockies for the major league record, according to information provided by the Reds from the Elias Sports Bureau.

With the game tied 1-1, Kelby Tomlinson drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single off Caleb Cotham (0-1). Gregor Blanco followed with another run-scoring single, putting the Giants in position for their fifth straight win at Great American Ball Park.

Samardzija (4-1) had been 0-5 in his last nine starts against the Reds, but limited them to three hits - including Adam Duvall's homer - to end the slump.
