PITTSBURGH (AP) - The San Francisco Giants have advanced to the National League Division Series against Washington by clobbering the Pirates 8-0 in the wild card game at Pittsburgh. Madison Bumgarner struck out 10 while going the distance on a four-hitter to help the Giants earn a trip to Washington against the Nationals. Brandon Crawford opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a grand slam before Brandon Belt added two hits and three RBIs.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 in a preseason game last night. Matt Calvert had two goals and an assist, and rookie Marko Dano also scored twice in the third period. Michael Chaput and Artem Anisimov added goals for the Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Quarterback Jake Locker practiced yesterday with the Tennessee Titans, and now he will see how his right wrist responds to a full session of throwing the ball. Locker says he isn't overly concerned, and expects to play on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James is hoping to motivate kids by telling his own inspiring story. The NBA superstar is co-producing a half-hour TV series called "Becoming," which will showcase the journeys of some of today's top athletes. The pilot focuses on James, his struggles growing up in a single-parent home in Akron, Ohio, and his rise to become one of the world's best basketball players. The show premieres October 26th on Disney XD.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A student who ran onto the field during an Ohio State football game and was body-slammed by a coach is losing his scholarship. Officials this week started removing Anthony Wunder from the Evans Scholars program, which covers tuition and housing for former golf caddies. The fourth-year engineering student is charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing.
